Our Soap
What do we mean by “American Style” soap?
“American Style” is how we describe our approach, inspired by the finest early American skincare traditions. It isn't about one official recipe or a claim that every ingredient is American. Instead, it reflects a contrast between the products of Europe, especially Castille soaps, which are traditionally made with olive oil alone. We, instead, draw on time-honored soapmaking ingredients and methods from American colonist, using the best plant and animal oils. It's from a time when baths were not just necessary. They were a luxury, Soap wasn't simply a commodity. for them It was a premium product and something to be cherished.
We then balance those time-honored ingredients with care and modern precision for everyday use. Our traditional cold-process bar soaps bring together lard, coconut oil, beef tallow, olive oil, and castor oil. Each ingredient contributes something different to the finished bar. The blend is what matters.
The idea connects to our name, too. Soak Street is an imagined little street just off the American Main Street. It's a nod to a time when a maker stood behind his goods, when quality mattered, and when well-made essentials were valued. We’re carrying that spirit forward: rooted in tradition, made for modern life. Read our story.
Why use both animal fats and plant oils?
Each oil brings different qualities to soap. We balance lard and beef tallow with coconut, olive, and castor oils to create the lather, cleansing feel, conditioning character, and lasting bar we want. No single oil has to do everything.
As a result, our natural bar soaps are not vegan for a reason. When oils are converted to soap, they each bring something unique to the table, different fatty acid structures that other oils can't match. Palm oil can't make the same kind of soap as lard and tallow, which is why we didn't choose these traditional ingredients to fit in. We chose them because they make great soap.
Where can I find the full ingredient list?
Our bar soaps share a core base of saponified lard, coconut oil, beef tallow, olive oil, and castor oil. Other ingredients—such as kaolin clay, essential oils, goat milk, or activated charcoal—vary by product.
Our foaming soaps also use a tallow, coconut, olive oil, and castor base. They include less than 1% of a preservative for freshness and less than 1% of an emulsifier to support the scent.
Our whipped tallow creams include beef tallow, beeswax, castor oil, jojoba oil, and arrowroot powder.
Check the individual product page or the side of its box for that product’s complete ingredient list.
Our Values
How do you approach ingredient sourcing?
We do not used any palm oil in our products, which some have linked to serious sourcing concerns. We do not use any titanium dioxide either, which is a powder used in many "natural" soaps to create an artificially whiter product. No, our products don't need it or other dyes. The bright white color you see in our original bar, for example, is all natural, and it's beautiful. We have no need to add dyes or other powders just to try to make it appear that way. It just s that way naturally.
We also take care in choosing suppliers, especially for animal-derived ingredients. Our tallow supplier, for example, provides us with beef tallow that is no doubt grass-fed, as nearly all beef and beef tallow sold in America is from pasture raised cattle. It would be rare and expensive not to raise cattle through some traditional grazing. The main differentiator is with "grass-finished" products. Skincare companies that are being honest when they say they use any material amount of grass-finished tallow in their products will have a premium markup because the tallow is often considerably more expensive.
In our use, however, we did not observe any noticeable difference in our products that would justify passing on that cost to you just so we could market it that way. Instead, we chose to use exclusively deodorized tallow, which is tallow that has gone through a purifying process to remove nearly all particles and impurities from the rendered oil so there is no unwanted "beefy" smell. The outcome is a beautiful white tallow that we much prefer to even the grass-finished options we've tested. Simply put, we think using deodorized tallow produces a higher quality skincare product for everyday use.
What does “Freedom Minded” mean to Soak Street?
We believe in individual liberty, justice for all, and personal responsibility. We also believe in loving our neighbors and treating them all with genuine respect, even if we disagree at times.
For us, being "Freedom Minded" is part of running an independent family business with care and honesty, while also honoring the American principles that used to make "American Made" mean something special. We not only want to bring back the best traditional soaps and skincare. We also want to restore the best traditions of business from the past too. The "snake oil" salesmen has no place with us, but we welcome and strive to be like the honest, hardworking craftsmen who represents the best traditions, those that should never be lost.
